Play Nice!

As one of the first developers on the iOS App Store with the games SlotZ Racer and Flick Fishing and also, before that, pioneers of ‘tip jar’ payment with Bushfire and Airburst on the Mac, Strange Flavour have always explored ways to write great games at reasonable prices that players can afford.

Recently more and more games have moved towards IAP (In-App Purchase based payment) as it has proven popular with a large segment of gamers. Unfortunately, it has also shown to be very unpopular with other gamers – a lot of the IAP systems allow players to deliberately or accidentally run up huge bills.

For their upcoming game Any Landing, Strange Flavour will be trying out a new payment system that they have tentatively named “Play Nice”. The game will be priced at the lowest tier so as to be a reasonable cost of entry and an entirely optional IAP can be used by players who want to accelerate their gameplay.

Unlike other IAP based systems, Play Nice always has an “All you can eat” option that permanently unlocks all optional content. What’s more, when a player purchases any of the lower priced content, the cost of that is taken off the price of the All You Can Eat item meaning they’ll never pay more than a fixed amount. Once the player has purchased All You Can Eat, it’s theirs permanently.

It is hoped the Play Nice system will allow players to enjoy the games they want, the way they want, without accidentally racking up huge bills while at the same time, allowing the developers to still make a living.

CEO and Lead Coder Aaron Fothergill explains, “In-App Purchase is a very useful feature that has recently been somewhat abused in games. Strange Flavour wants to play nice and help rebuild the players’ trust.”
